Learning efficiency of visuo-motor transformation reaches distinct peaks with two different error-feedback timings of movement end and task end
Takumi Ishikawa, Yutaka Sakaguchi (UEC) NC2010-170
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Kitazawa et al. (1995) reported that the aftereffect of prism adaptation in manual reaching task was significantly reduced if the visual error feedback was delayed more than 50 ms. This suggests that our brain has a learning mechanism accepting error information in a limited time after the movement offset. To examine this point further, the authors ran a behavioral experiment using a virtual shooting task. The amount of aftereffect significantly varied depending on the feedback timing: Especially, it showed two distinct peaks around the end of body movement and the end of the shooting task. This suggests that our brain might have two distinct learning mechanisms in visuo-motor transformation with different error-acceptance timings.
