Multiple sounds classification system for hearing impaired people support

(in English) A hearing information processing system using learning vector quantization neural networks based on the human auditory mechanism had been previously proposed. This system was specifically designed for hardware implementation, with feature vectors represented by binary vectors which can be compared by means of the simple Hamming distance. Although efficiently applied to single sound sources, this system could not handle multiple sounds. This paper proposes a method for recognizing multiple instrumental sounds by extracting the pitch information and then recognizing each sound source independently. Experimental results show that several combinations of musical instruments and pitches could be successfully recognized.
