Physiological studies have revealed that the primary auditory cortex (A1) has a disordered tonotopic map, unlike the tidy retinotopic map of the primary visual cortex (V1). Additionally, our previous studies have shown that the different receptive field structures of A1 and V1 may reflect statistics of natural stimuli in audition and vision. We here hypothesize that the map difference is also a result of adapting to different statistics of natural stimuli. The present study describes how a V1 map model, topographic independent component analysis, can generate A1-like disordered maps, adapting to stimuli of high "auditoriness". |
