Reverse correlation (RC), or spike-triggered average (STA), is known as a powerful method for estimating the properties of nonlinear brain processes. This technique has been widely used in neurophysiological studies to measure the receptive-field properties of neurons, whereas, in psychophysics, an application of the RC was limited to the experiments with simple tasks. This is because the RC constrains the distribution of stimuli strongly, and, moreover, the estimates are biased when observers' perceptual processes have strong nonlinearity. Here we present an analytical method for nonlinear psychophysical processes with arbitrarily distributed stimuli, and show the results of computer simulations and a psychophysical experiment with the present method. |
