Chronological Analysis of Distance Between Concepts Based on Image Instances

(in English) In document retrieval, incorporating the relationship among concepts improves the performance of a retrieval. Similarly, in image retrieval, the relationship among concepts corresponding to their image features will be useful especially in interactive image retrieval using query images.In this report, we analyze the relationship among concepts defined by a large amount of image instances with their tags. To this end, we investigate a few types of distances between concepts that are referred to as an image instance based distance (IIBD) using low-level image features and compare the distance between concepts based on the relationship in WordNet. We also analyze the chronological change of IIBD using monthly-aggregated image instance sets. Our experimental results demonstrate that, although the IIBD can be similar to the WordNet based distances, it forms a specific structure in an image feature space.
