Character Recognition in Three-Dimensional Space

(in English) In this paper, we propose a new method of recognizing rotated characters in three-dimensional space. In the proposed method, we recognize characters by generating rotated characters as learning samples on a computer and construct the classifier. As the result of the evaluation experiment of recognition rate, using printed alphanumeric characters (all 62 character type, and approximately 600 samples for each character type) as experimental data, high recognition rate 99.34\% was obtained even when rotated characters were given as inputs, and 99.59\% when not rotated characters were given as inputs. Also, we have assured that learning rotated characters does not negatively affect so much when recognizing not rotated characters in this experiment. Moreover, all 437 characters that were cutted out from camera-captured images were correctly recognized and checked the efficiency of our proposed method. By this time, we have found that when recognizing camera-captured characters, learning three-dimensional rotation can almost cover perspective distortion in this experiment. In addition, we introcude ``detecting rotation angle of characters in three-dimensional space for scene analysis''.
