Cognitive radio system (CRS) that dynamically access radio spectrum based on the availability of unoccupied spectrum has become a reality. Such opportunistic radio system has gone beyond a theoretical and academic research interest. Regulatory bodies are rolling out series of rules that allow unlicensed operation in certain spectrum bands while avoiding interference to existing legacy services. CRS deployed for unlicensed operation thus require to implement a reliable mechanism to minimize interference to the incumbent services. One of such mechanisms is accessing a geo-location database that indicates available channel list for a particular area. The IEEE 802.11af Task Group (TG) that is currently developing a draft standard for Wi-Fi using the TV white spaces (unoccupied TV broadcasting channels) is addressing the protection of incumbent services (TV broadcasts) through consideration of channel availability check from the geo-location database. This article explores the geo-location database access method including a technical proposal that facilitates mobility. The proposal is accompanied by a computer simulation that evaluates mobility area versus capacity to demonstrates its usefulness. |
