| (in English) | Matching Pursuits, known as a method of approximating signal waveforms by a linear combination of overcomplete basis-functions, enables efficient representation of locally distributed signals by giving degrees of freedom not only for weights (expansion coefficients) of the linear combination but also for location of the respective basis-functions. However, sizes and shapes of the basis-functions are limited to the specific ones available in a predefined set called a dictionary. This paper proposes a more flexible method which allows us to deform continuous functions used in replace of the basis-functions. In this method, we employ the two-dimensional Gabor funcion whose shape is controllable by eight kinds of parameters. These parameters are iteratively optimized by the quasi-Newton method so as to minimize the sum of squared approximation errors. In our experiments, it is suggested that the proposed method has a potential for being used as an image coding technique and its coding performance can be better than the JPEG baseline scheme at relatively low coding rates. | |
