A Study on Network Quality of Wireless Mesh Networks for a Shelter Communication System

(in English) “Shelter Communication System” provides such services as communication between those within a shelter and those outside the disaster area or those within other shelters with a connection to the Internet through a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) established among the shelters. We constructed a WMN testbed using school facilities around Niigata University, which may be used as the real shelters in case of a disaster. This testbed employs directional antennas for establishing connection with a wireless LAN link between neighboring shelters, which are several kilometers away from each other. In this paper, we presented the results of the experiments regarding network quality of this testbed. Specifically, we confirmed reduction in intra-flow interference with appropriate channel assignment and route selection.
