Spectrum scarcity has become one of the limiting factors of the evolution of wireless communication systems to incorporate better services and accommodate. Cognitive radio system (CRS) has been considered as an effective approach to resolve this issue. Both macadamia and industry have carried out many theoretical analysis and filed tests to prove the concept. However, the successful commercialization of CRS depends on regional regulations on spectrum usage and standardizations of air interfaces. Regulatory bodies such as the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) of the USA has released the rules that allowing unlicensed operation in TV band. Correspondingly, the IEEE 802.11af task group has started standardization for commercial CRS in TV white space (TVWS). New management functions and frames are introduced for CRS to operate following FCC regulations. This paper addresses the key new features introduced in the IEEE 802.11af draft
standard. Simulations are shown to demonstrate their usefulness. |
