On the Longitude Drift of Geostationary Satellites

(in English) If a geostationary satellite stops its station-keeping function, the satellite will soon start to move to the east and west, and to the north and south as well. The east-west motion, or the drift motion in longitude, is alarming as it may disturb other operational satellites, and such an event has happened in 2010. In this material we will review the basic mechanism of longitude drift, and show that the drift motions may occur in different patters as depending on longitude regions. Also, we point out a possible misunderstanding one may fall in when discussing about drift motions.
