The rapid deployment of wireless LANs provides sufficient density of access points to achieve a near-ubiquitous network. The owners of wireless LANs, however, are prone to deny public access due to the increased traffic and security risk. In consequence, users have to localize themselves only in particular areas of the networks, where the access services are available, resulting in sporadic user congestion at certain popular spaces (hot-spots) within the networks. To overcome this problem, we introduce and evaluate a pricing-based load-distribution approach for motivating the owners to share their network to the public providing hot-spot congestion relief. The goals of this work are: (i) to provide a right incentive for the owners of access point to share their networks to the public; (ii) to improve overall network utilization by making more efficient uses of deployed resources; and (iii) to guarantee at least a minimum amount of bandwidth to users. The service is priced according to: (i) the level of QoS guarantee that an access point provided; and (ii) the available capacity of the access point. The heavier load the access point has, the higher rate she charges for the service. Thus, the users incentively adapt themselves to associate with less congested, less costly access points. |
