[Tutorial Lecture] Tutorial on Fundamentals of Coordinated Multipoint Transmission Techniques

(in English) The interference between cells covered by the different base stations is a major obstacle to the system performance enhancement in the cellular system such as mobile communication systems. The 3rd generation mobile communication systems based on CDMA and 3.9 generation systems based on OFDMA such as LTE and WiMAX have achieved an universal frequency reuse among cells by utilizing a spreading operation or powerful channel coding, and increase the average cell throughput compared to the conventional systems relying on frequency reuse partitioning between cells. However, the throughput of the users near the cell edge is in general largely degraded compared to that of the cell-interior users due to the severe inter-cell interference.
To solve the problem, recently the coordinated multipoint transmission technique has been proposed and studied extensively. The coordinated multipoint transmission mitigates the inter-cell interference and/or makes full use of interference link (the link between the user and neighbor base station) to improve the transmission performance. To achieve this, in the coordinated multipoint transmission, multiple neighbor base stations collaboratively perform (1) scheduling (allocation of time, frequency, space resources to users), (2) power control, and (3) beamforming using multiple antennas at the base stations, taking into account the instantaneous link condition between the users and multiple coordinated base stations. In this tutorial, we overview the fundamentals of coordinated multipoint transmission techniques and recent advances focusing on the downlink transmission.
