This talk provides R&D approaches for next generation passive optical network systems, which enables to provide future high quality broadband network access services. Key technologies and standardization activities are elucidated towards ten gigabit per second and higher bit rate class PON (Passive Optical Network) systems. I also show research efforts to realize effective power saving schemes for optical access network systems. Especially, my talk focuses on some research results of a hybrid scheme which uses both ONU sleep and alternative link rate techniques. |
