Statistical investigation of polarization-dependent loss for polarization-division-multiplexing digital coherent transmission

(in English) We report a statistical investigation of the two impairments caused by polarization-dependent loss (PDL) in polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) digital coherent transmission: level imbalance and loss of orthogonality between PDMed tributaries. The statistics of the level imbalance caused by PDL is revealed to be consistent with the Gaussian distribution. Outage probabilities are estimated by the introduced statistics of the level imbalance and the loss of orthogonality induced by PDL.
