Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Aiming at the realization of “Super Hi-Vision” (SHV) satellite broadcasting, NHK is studying a scheme for high-capacity transmission by Broadcasting Satellite Service (BSS) in the 21-GHz band. At first, we introduce the example cases of SHV transmission via satellite conducted by NHK and cooperators. Second, we mention a QPSK/8PSK wideband (300-MHz bandwidth) modem whose FEC scheme is the concatenation of LDPC and BCH code. The maximum symbol rate is 250 Mbaud and it can provide wide range of information bit rates from 251 Mbps (a combination of modulation and code rate is QPSK-1/2) to 677 Mbps (8PSK-9/10). LDPC coding has an excellent performance which is close to the “Shannon limit”. Therefore, the LDPC coded modem has to achieve robustness of synchronization against the very low C/N conditions under which LDPC code can demonstrate error correction performance. This is a strong motivation to periodically introduce a п/2 shifted BPSK based Phase Reference Burst Signal (PRBS) to the symbol frame. The performances evaluation by changing PRBS lengths is a focal point of this paper. We evaluate the transmission performances under IF loopback conditions as a whole to understand the effect of PRBS. C/N vs. BER and phase synchronization are fully investigated. Also, we report the performances under satellite-loop condition using the “WINDS” satellite.
