A Study of Energy Harvesting from Ambient RF Sources

(in English) Energy harvesting from ambient RF sources has been studied in this report. The preliminary measurement campaign carried out in a common suburban environment showed that the received power obtained from 800 MHz band mobile telephone base station was averagely stronger than that from Digital TV broadcasting. To get high electric power and high output DC voltage, Cockcroft-Walton circuit was adopted in the RF-to-DC conversion circuit. As a set of experiments at an indoor circumstance, the electric power obtained from the 800 MHz mobile telephone base station with using the RF-to-DC circuit was led to a 1.0 F electric double layer capacitor to be charged up to 235 mV in 1500 minutes. We demonstrated that the accumulated power in the capacitor was enough to drive a LCD clock for 20 seconds after boosted with a DC-DC converter.
