A Study on Speech Enhancement Using LPEF with Cost Function Based 4th Order Cumulant for Sudden Noise

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, the speech enhancement with a linear prediction error filter (LPEF) based on 4th order cumulant is proposed to reduce the non-stationary noise which is suddenly generated by hitting an object. The linear predictor converges such that the output of the linear predictor becomes the component with high kurtosis. The non-stationary noise is non-Gaussian with high kurtosis, on the other hand speech has low kurtosis. Thus, the linear predictor can estimate only the non-stationary noise. However, it is difficult for the LPEF based on a forward linear prediction to reduce the non-stationary noise, because the noise component is not included in the tap inputs when non-stationary noise is generated. Therefore, the backward linear prediction is used as the LPEF.
