The Information Theory that John von Neumann had in Mind -- The Mechanism of Evolution by Thermodynamics, Logics and Digital Information --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Most people think of the name of Claude Shannon, when they hear about Information Theory. However, it was John von Neumann (1903-1957) who realized the importance of Information Theory, which enables the self-reproduction of living organism and evolution toward the direction of complexity as automata. He evaluated the basic concepts such as “combinatorics”, “thermal dynamics”, “formal logics”, “digital”, and defined the functions of the Turing Machine, digital neural networks, and long-term memory system.
The information is composed with the distinctive and finite number of logical signals in one-dimensional sequential presentation. It modulates carrier, transfers over the channel and composes complex meaning at the destination after digital demodulation. As digital signals are superior to those of analog in terms of the Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio, they can compose infinite number of code by combinatorics, and the message arrives at the destination without any errors in a single transmission. Quasi-infinite number of code words and quasi-error-free communication yield synergetic effect: short code words become able to indicate the rules of conjunction of meaning units and modulation of meanings: they are the grammars in language, the non-coding RNAs in protein synthesis and the protocol switches in computer networks. It is remarkable that the information can not only send information to be processed at the destination but also specify how to construct information processing circuits. By repeating these procedures, one can increase the complexity level to be transferred by information. It is plausible that thus the self-reproduction of living organism and the evolution should have taken place autopoietically.
