High Efficient VOD System for Quick Seek

(in English) The quick seek of VOD is vital for a high level of user satisfaction. At the same time, many server resources are required to achieve the quick seek of VOD. In this research, to improve the efficiency of VOD system achieving quick seek, we proposed a load balancer that clusters two types of servers. Our system uses the acceleration servers to transmit initial video data at high throughput, and the normal servers to transmit the following video data at the video bit-rate. And, our load balancer switches the TCP connections from the acceleration servers to the normal servers after the acceleration servers transmit the initial data. The high-throughput transmissions of initial video data are aggregated into the acceleration servers. This can improve the efficiency of the server resource by the scale effect. We implemented our system, and confirmed the feasibility of that in an experimental environment. In addition, we simulated the relationship between the number of servers achieving the seek time equivalent to the conventional system and the number of users connectable to the servers, and we showed that our system could reduce the number of servers by 28-38% while keeping the service quality. Our system is expected to enhance the efficiency of the server resources.
