We propose a Linuxe-based software environment in which Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality (AR/MR) demonstration programs can show expected performance as it is written in papers by preparing same hardware set-up. The environment that includes all the essential software such as device drivers, operating system, and AR/MR demonstration program are stored in a single USB memory. Since AR/MR demonstration program runs by relying on the software in the USB memory, this approach guarantees its repeatability if only same hardware is prepared. We call this software environment a Casper cartridge. Our Casper cartridge has three more important advantages. First is its easy operation because target AR/MR program can run by just plugging the USB memory to hardware. Second is its easy redistribution. Third is its expansibility since others can examine and improve programs on this software environment. Our project will be helpful for researchers who wish to show their system performance correctly, and for researchers and new students who will start their AR/MR researches. “ARToolKit” and “Parallel Tracking and Mapping (PTAM)” are taken up as example AR/MR demonstration programs. A TRAKMARK evaluation program will be also ready in our Casper cartridge project too. |
