Verification of Translation Repair Support Using Plain Japanese

(in English) Translation repair is a method for making a sentence with few unsuitable translation parts in machine translation. However, the task of translation repair is a heavy burden for users because the users have to think where they should repair and how they should repair. Therefore, we think that we need rules or policies which support users when they do tasks of translation repair. In this report, we focused on ``Plain Japanese'' which is designed for foreigners who is not good at Japanese. We made an experiment which examinees rewrote a sentence into plain Japanese manually, and we verified influences on the translation result which a sentence was rewritten into plain Japanese. As a result, we obtained following findings. (1) It takes about 3 to 4 minutes that examinees rewrite a sentence into plain Japanese. The translation repair method by the back translation in the precedence research takes about 1.5 to 2.5 minutes. Therefore, this method which examinees rewrite a sentence into plain Japanese takes more time than the translation repair method by the back translation. (2) We found that leaving a space between words, simplifying words and missing information in rewriting into plain Japanese are likely to have an adverse influence on the translation result.
