[Invited Talk] Energy-Efficient Wireless LAN employing Wake-up Radio

(in English) With the explosive growth of WiFi compliant devices, the number of deployed access points (APs) in wireless local area network (WLAN) is continuously increasing all over the world. These APs wastefully consume non-negligible amount of energy in an idle state where there is no user to support. While the power wastefully consumed by a single AP is small, the total amount of energy consumed by huge number of APs can be a non-negligible source of global CO2 emission. In order to reduce energy consumed by idle APs, we have proposed a radio-on-demand (ROD) network which offers wireless access only when and where it is needed in an on-demand manner. Each ROD AP is equipped with a low-cost and low-power wake-up receiver, and only the wake-up receiver is turned on during the idle state. A station which needs to communicate with an AP first transmits a wake-up signal to the wake-up receiver of the target AP which, after the successful reception of the wake-up signal, turns on the main system and data transceivers. We provide an overview and design principles of our proposed ROD network and discuss its benefit in terms of energy-efficiency. We also present our proposed wake-up mechanism which uses 802.11-based WLAN signals for conveying wake-up ID information to On-Off-Keying (OOK) based wake-up receivers.
