Real-time 8-directional motion detection and aperture-problem identification by GPU implementation of V1 cell model Akitoshi Hanazawa (Kyutech) NC2011-70 |

We attempted real-time implementation of spatiotemporal energy model by parallel image processing on GPU (Graphic Processing Unit). Spatiotemporal energy model has been recognized as the most plausible algorithm corresponding to the motion detection performed by simple and complex cells existing in area V1 of cats or macaque monkeys. Processing time required for one image frame was less than 10 ms when detecting 8 motion directions at 4 image resolutions and temporal summation of 5 frames. This temporal resolution exceeds the sampling rate of ordinary USB cameras (33ms/frame). Furthermore, 8 directional motion detection enabled identification of the aperture problem by observing the distribution of response amplitude across the 8 directional spatiotemporal filters, which cannot be identified by 4 directional motion detection. Present system can be used for the development of algorithms conquering the aperture problem in real-time natural image processing. |
