Distributed antenna network (DAN), in which antennas are spatially distributed over the wireless cell, can suppress the impacts of distance-dependent path loss and shadowing loss as well as that of fading by using multiple antennas for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmissions. MIMO spatial multiplexing is especially suitable for DAN because of its high received signal power. In this paper, we compare the downlink channel capacity of MIMO spatial multiplexing in DAN to that in conventional cellular network (CN) in which antennas are centralized at the center of the wireless cell. Assuming the block transmission with cyclic prefix (CP), we derive a channel capacity expression for downlink MIMO spatial multiplexing in a frequency-selective channel. The downlink channel capacity distribution in DAN and that in CN are evaluated by Monte Carlo numerical computation method. It is shown that DAN-MIMO spatial multiplexing can significantly reduce the required transmit power compared to CN-MIMO spatial multiplexing and it can achieve high channel capacity over the entire cell. |
