A CSMA/CA Based MAC Protocol to Improve TCP Performance in Multi-hop Cognitive Network
Takamasa Kimura, Takeo Fujii (UEC) SR2011-75
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we have propose a novel MAC protocol to improve the TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) performance in a cognitive multi-hop mobile ad hoc network (CR MANET: Cognitive Radio, Mobile Ad hoc Network) with wireless LAN system. In particular, the legacy wireless LAN (PU: Primary User) shares the spectrum for other users (SU: Secondary User) of MANET to increase the spectrum efficiency. In order to realize such spectrum sharing system, the SU should protect primary system during data sending. In general, the TCP performance of SU dramatically decreases in CR MANET environment. In particular, the congestion control mechanism of TCP miss-detects much congestion due to packet loss and time out even if congestion is not appeared. As a result, TCP performance degrades because TCP of transmitter over-decreases a amount of sending data. In this paper, in order to resolve such problem, we propose an adaptive contention widow size control method to correspond with TCP behavior. In the proposed method, the contention window size is controlled according to the TCP cwnd (congestion window) size at a MAC layer of each secondary sender. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by using computer simulations and we confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.
