Recently, many ultrasonic devices in industry and commercial use including parametric loudspeakers have been developed. Unfortunately, effects of intense ultrasound on human beings have been unclear so far. In order to investigate the effect of ultrasound to the auditory sense, hearing thresholds for pulsed pure tones from 1 kHz to 16 kHz were measured before and after the presentation of ultrasound of three-minute duration. The results show that the changes of hearing thresholds are small, being lower than a level step of 5 dB on ordinary audiometry.
Additionally, there are no significant differences of threshold changes among three conditions; no-ultrasound, 115 dB ultrasound, and 120 dB ultrasound irradiation. Interestingly, the possibility of effects on hearing losses is not demonstrated in the present studies. |
