Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We measured both direction and directivity of pulses emitted by CF-FM bats during intercepting to a fluttering moth in a chamber by using the microphone array system. In terminal phase (target distance < 1 m) , the bat was found to expand beam width of tFM component of echolocation pulse from approximately ± 20 - 30°; up to ± 45°; horizontally, and from approximately ± 10 - 20°; up to ± 45°; vertically. We suggest that the bats adjusted beam width to retain moving target in spatial window of echolocation at final stage of capturing. In addition, the returning echo from the fluttering moth was measured by emitting CF pulse from ultrasonic loudspeaker. Echo level of the fluttering moth was changed by the incident angle of the sounds. When approaching to two fluttering moths, the bat chose the moth which returned stronger echo level.
