Spatio-temporal properties of spike initiation in response to electric stimuli in an auditory nerve fiber model with stochastic ion channels

(in English) Cochlear implant is a technology which allows deaf people to hear sounds with electrical stimulations. In this report, spatio-temporal properties of spike initiation in response to electric stimuli are invesitgated in an auditory nerve fiber with stochastic sodium and potassium channels through computer simulations. This kind of properties is exclusively performed through computer simulations, unlike animal experiments. The results of computer simulations show that spike initiations in response to a single pulsatile electric stimlus are randmized spatially and temporally as the electrode-to-fiber increases. Likewise, it is shown that spike initiations in response to the second pulssatile stimulus in a paired two pulse stimulus situation are more distributed spatially and temporally, compared with those of a single pulse stimulus, implying the influences of refractory properties on the ra
ndmization of spike initiations. In conclusion, the randmness or fluctuation of spike initiations in response to pulsatile electric stimuli plays an important role in designing stimulus waveforms.
