Prototyping and Evaluating Support System for Understanding Multilingual Documents in Offshore Software Development

(in English) The offshore development, where a company commissions a whole or a part of software development to foreign companies, is now a global trend of software development. Due to the multilingual and intercultural nature, a variety of communication problems arises in the offshore development. This paper especially focuses on two problems: (a) difficulty for the offshore side to understand document in a different language, (b) difficulty for the onshore side to grasp the understanding of the partners. To cope with these problems, we design and develop a communication support system with two key features, the machine translation with the Language Grid web services and the feedback of understanding information. We have conducted an experimental evaluation, where 8 Chinese developers with Japanese competency read and understand a requirement specification of a liquor inventory management system. As a result, it was shown that the proposed system was useful especially for those with low Japanese competency to understand the specification.
