In this paper, an experimental study on bandwidth expansion of multi-layered wave absorber using short carbon fiber is proposed. The absorber is composed of conductive short carbon fibers placed on a coplanar of the spacer and metal plate placed in the back. This could be analyzed as a $\lambda/4$ type equivalent circuit, consists of surface impedance having frequency characteristics. From the results, one-layer type could adjust the matching frequency and strength by the length of short carbon fibers and the thickness of the spacer. The optimized absorber had two matching frequencies and fractional bandwidth (FB) was 96.6%. Then measured and calculated absorption characteristics were compared by using the two-layered equivalent circuit. This circuit is composed of cascade connection of proposed circuit. The matching frequencies showed good agreement with measured result, but its FB was very narrow due to the perfect reflection point and this may be the effect of coupling. Then, the three-layered absorber was fabricated to improve the FB. As a result, the wave absorber having wide band characteristics was achieved, which had 164.7% of FB and increased absorption. |
