Rotation and scale-invariant local feature based on co-occurrence of edge gradient and its application to general object recognition

(in English) A bag-of-visual-words method based on a frequency histogram of local features is widely used for detecting general object from video data. However, the conventional method cannot take into account the relationship between the local features and it ignores positional relation between subregions. This paper proposes a rotation and scale-invariant local feature based on co-occurrence of edge gradient. The proposed method determines the scale of the feature point based on the difference of Gaussian and determines the dominant direction based on the frequency of edge directions around the feature point. The feature descriptor is then calculated based on the co-occurrence matrix between weighted edge-direction histograms in the surrounding area. In addition, this paper describes the method of utilizing the proposed local feature for the general object recognition method. The experiment on video data about 400 hours long was performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
