Direct Pressure Welding Technique of Aluminum Foils by Using Electromagnetic Force

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper describes a new pressure welding technique for aluminum foils and its experimental results. When an impulse current from an energy-stored capacitor bank flows through a one-turn coil consisting of two adjacent linear conductors, big electromagnetic repulsion force acts on the conductors. A part of magnetic flux intersects to overlapped aluminum foils fixed outside of the conductors. Slight eddy currents are induced inside the foils. The foils (12 μm thick) can be welded along the conductor by the big repulsion force of the conductors and the slight Joule heat generated in foils without melting. A bank energy required for such a welding is less than 0.4 kJ.
