We examined the effects of targets of attention on the brain activity during listening to music by fMRI images taken with tasks requiring alternate attention to timbre and melody line of the stimulus phrases. A stimulus consisted of two short phrases. The first 'original' phrase was one of four short newly composed melodies played in one of three timbres. The second phrase was either exactly the same as the first one or differed either in melody or timber, or in both. The manipulation in the second phrase was made randomly and it was played one whole tone higher than the first phrase. The participants were instructed to pay attention either to the timber or to the melody line and to judge for the presence of difference in the target feature. White noise was used for control. The group analysis of 14 participants revealed the bilateral supra temporal gyri covering the primary auditory cortex as activated in the two conditions. The area activated only during attending to melody line was the left premotor area. There was no area activated only during attending to the timbre. |
