Smart antennas provide electronically control of beam direction depending on the situation and exchange data with another node in a given direction. It can prevent the interference and improve the spatial utilization of wireless channel. Moreover, smart antennas can extend communication range, so as to reduce number of hops. However, inter-flow interference leads to a decrease in simultaneous communication and intra-flow interference incur the directional hidden terminal and deafness problems. Therefore, to design a directional MAC protocol to make use of smart antennas, challenges are controlling directivity, transmission power and transmission rate between communication nodes. This paper discusses controlling the directivity of smart antenna to enhance the network performance. At first, we evaluate the impact of the directivities to the performance. According to the results, we propose a MAC protocol called DMAC/BA which controls transmission and receiving directivities by adaptively controlling the beam width depending on the relative locations of the peer node and the traffic of the other flows. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve higher network throughput in mobile and multi-hop environment. |
