[Invited Talk] Fundamentals and Its Applications of OFDM Technology
Hideo Kobayashi (Mie Univ.) MoMuC2011-47 AN2011-76 USN2011-82
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique has been received a lot of attentions especially in the field of multimedia wireless communications systems because of its efficient usage of frequency bandwidth and robustness to multipath fading. From these advantages, OFDM technique has been already adopted as the standard transmission techniques in the terrestrial digital broadcasting, wireless LAN and terrestrial mobile communications systems. Furthermore OFDM has been considered as one of the promising techniques for the future wireless communication systems from that OFDM has potential capability to enhance its performance relatively by merging with multiple access method, forward error correction method, adaptive modulation and frequency slot assignment method according to the channel conditions and multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) method. However some challenging research topics still remain unsolved in the OFDM technique such as the frequency synchronization problem in uplink OFDMA system, PAPR (peak to averaged power ratio) problem in non-linear channel and Doppler frequency spread problem in time-varying fading channel, all of which would lead the fatal degradation of OFDM performances. This paper firstly introduces the history of OFDM technique and its fundamental theory and then presents one of the solutions for these three challenging research topics.
