We have been developing a liquid-phase immunoassay using SQUID and magnetic markers. We investigated the magnetic properties of the marker in order to quantitatively evaluate the immunoassay results. Magnetic marker usually consists of agglomerate of nanoparticles, i.e., magnetic cluster, whose magnetic properties strongly depend on its size and magnetic interaction between nanoparticles. Taking account of the distribution of cluster size in practical makers, we tentatively assumed that the magnetic marker consisted of two types of magnetic cluster. One is a large magnetic cluster whose magnetic properties in liquid are dominated by the Brownian relaxation. The other is a small cluster whose magnetic properties are dominated by the Neel relaxation. We distinguished these two types of markers by analyzing the experimental M-H curve measured in liquid and solid phases. Because the evaluation results reasonably agreed with the immunoassay results, it became possible to quantitatively evaluate the immunoassay results from magnetic properties of the marker. |
