As mobile handset that is used in close proximity to the human body are common in modern life, concerns about the health risks from the associated electromagnetic (EM) fields have increased. Safety guidelines for EM wave exposures have been established by international standardization bodies. The electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure can suppress surface waves and reduce undesired radiation from an antenna. The present study investigates the performance of a planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) on an EBG substrate to realize a low specific absorption rate (SAR) antenna. The frequency band is 3.5 GHz, which will be assigned for 4th generation mobile communications. The size of EBG substrate is comparable to a wavelength, and thus can be small enough for a handset. The PIFA above the EBG substrate was found to reduce local SAR in a cubic head model by 57% as compared to that without EBG structure. To validate computational results with the FDTD method, a hybrid FEM/MoM method was also used. Although the difference of center frequency was 2.7%, band width was almost identical for both methods. |
