Polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) has received widespread attention as an effective way to double spectral efficiency in optical transmission systems. Recently it has been shown that in combination with coherent detection, PDM systems can be described as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. For PDM systems with MIMO processing, channel estimation is required at receivers. One of the methods used to enable the channel estimation is periodically inserting a piece of known data, namely training symbol (TS) in data stream at transmitters. In this polarization demultiplexing method, the channel estimation error may increase when the channel variance due to a state of polarization (SOP) change is large within TS spacing. In this paper, we experimentally evaluate tolerable SOP changing speed, and propose a faster polarization tracking with feedback method to tolerate larger SOP changes. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that the proposed method can improve the tolerance for SOP changes compared to a conventional non-feedback method. |
