As a recent developments, radio regulatory bodies are introducing flexible use of spectrum such as allowing the use of temporarily unoccupied VHF and UHF bands also known as television white spaces (TVWS) on unlicensed basis. The devices exploiting such opportunity, hereafter called secondary devices, access available TVWS without being required to obtain license. However such devices are required to meeting the regulatory requirements to avoid harmful interference to the incumbent services. In the occurrence of multiple operational secondary devices in the same vicinity, unhealthy competition to occupy the same spectrum would be inevitable. In the worst scenario, a single VHF or UHF channel has to be shared among coexisting networks. Without coexistence mechanism in place, users might simply increase their transmit power in an attempt to overcome the surrounding interference which is not an effective way of circumventing the problem. We propose a distributed coexistence algorithm (DCA) to be implemented by TVWS devices/networks located in close vicinity. The TVWS devices/Networks cooperate by sharing operational parameters in order to implement self enforcing coexistence algorithms. Through the knowledge of the exchanged parameters, devices dynamically select the the appropriate transmit power that minimizes the mutual interference among the cooperating networks. We demonstrate by simulation that choosing of optimum transmit power vector, in which each element of the vector corresponds to the optimum transmit power of particular network, ensures minimum outage occurrence that any of the cooperating networks experience link quality below a specified threshold. We also explore other practical approaches such as divide-and-conquer and simulated annealing, that would result in sub-optimal solutions to implement the DCA. |
