A demonstration experiment of advanced search and rescue system using an actual satellite

(in English) Under the funding for Survey and Research on Earth Observation technologies from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Taiyo Musen Corporation Ltd., jointly with Association of Radio Industries and Businesses, has conducted “Demonstration Experiment on modernizing Search and Rescue Satellite System using Navigation Satellite System” from fiscal year 2010, utilizing Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) “MICHIBIKI” developed under the initiative of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The aim of the experiment was to prove that L1-SAIF (Submeter-class Augmentation with Integrity Function) signal could be used to provide a two way communication channel to a Search and Rescue beacon for possibility to modernize Search and Rescue system. The modernized system may provide a better survivability, an effective Rescue action and a mitigation of false alert, by sending short messages from a Rescue center to respond to an alert signal or to inquire the alert situation. In FY2010, experiments using a simulator were conducted and in FY2011, experiments were conducted using the launched QZSS navigation satellite This paper reports the result of these experiments.
