Test Production of a Dual Self-Injection-Locked Wideband and Low Phase Noise VCO

(in English) Usually, phase noise of an oscillator improves as unloaded Q-factor of resonator increases. However, its improvement is limited in order to increase loss of a resonator in case of a low unloaded Q resonator. This paper describes a dual self-injection-locked VCO, which is able to improve phase noise in case of a low unloaded Q resonator. A fabricated dual-self-injection-locked VCO achieved phase noise of less than -118dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from the carrier and frequency bandwidth of 15GHz to 25GHz (50%). This means that phase noise improved more than 7dB by the proposed configuration. In addition to this result, frequency bandwidth of 2GHz to 12GHz (143%) by down-converting the output of the fabricated dual self-injection-locked VCO is achieved with same phase noise.
