In our proposed Radio-On-Demand (ROD) WLAN, each AP is transited to a sleep mode while there is no associated user. Each STA transmits a wake-up signal upon communications demands, which is received by a wake-up receiver installed into each ROD AP. The wake-up receiver operates with low-power consumption, which realizes significant reduction of wasteful energy consumed by idle APs. The wake-up signal transmitted by each STA consists of WLAN data frames with different length, to which a wake-up ID is embedded. The wake-up receiver detects each WLAN frame length and identifies the presence of wake-up request. In this paper, we attempt to reduce the energy consumption of wake-up receiver by introducing duty-cycling to the process of frame length detection. We also investigate how we can reduce wake-up error probability and wake-up delay by devising a transmission scheme of wake-up signal. Our simulation results show that, with OFF period in duty-cycling of 5 ms, we can reduce power consumption of wake-up receiver more than 90 % when the channel busy rate is set to be 1 %. We also show that the wake-up error probability can be kept below 10-2 with wake-up delay of around 35 ms if each STA transmits a long frame, which has the same duration as OFF period in duty-cycling, before sending a wake-up signal. |
