Vocabulary spurt is the term used to describe the rapid increase in word-learning speed at around 18 months of age. However, it still remains controversial whether this increase is a discrete or a continuous change. To define the onset of a vocabulary spurt, the present study analyzed longitudinal data from vocabulary histories of Japanese-speaking children by a two piece linear regression, which models the target using combination of two lines. We asked 17 monolingual Japanese-speaking mothers to report the acquisition date, pronunciation, and meaning of newly learned words that their children produced from 10 to 24 months via a web diary that we constructed for this project. The statistically determined two piece linear regression fitted very well with the individual data of cumulative vocabulary as a function of age. The result shows that the vocabulary spurt occurs at 614 days of age and at the 40.5th word on the average. Moreover, the estimations showed that children learned words at rates of average 5.4 words and 25.0 words per month before and after the vocabulary spurt, respectively and the latter rate is constant. The present study analyzed onsets of vocabulary spurts phenomenologically, assuming that vocabulary spurts should be discrete phenomena. However, we found a possibility to introduce a new model for the vocabulary spurts. We also discuss this point of view. |
