Effects of frequency-band elimination on syllable identification in Japanese noise-vocoded speech -- Analyses with two speakers --

(in English) The present investigation aimed at specifying the perceptual roles of each frequency bands in 4-band-noise-vocoded speech, whose bands were determined with factor analyses of power fluctuation of critical-band-filtered Japanese speech [Ueda, Nakajima, and Satsukawa (2010).Proc. 26th Ann. Meet. Inter. Soc. Psychophys., 39-44.], by eliminating one of the frequency bands.Amounts of information transmitted were calculated, based on confusion matrices of syllable identification.Eliminating the lowest band (50-570 Hz) crucially decreased amounts of information identifying consonants, whereas eliminating the second lowest band (570-1850 Hz) decreased amounts of information identifying vowels desicively, by altering almost all vowels into/i/.These results suggested that temporal relation between the lowest band and the other band was critical in consonant identification.Eliminating the third lowest band~(1850-4000 Hz) affected vowel identification slightly.Eliminating the highest band~(4000-7000 Hz) caused over all decrement of amount of information transmitted.
