As diverse services are emerging in the Internet, it commonly happens that a large number of users transmit large files simultaneously.
In such cases, if file transfer flows compete on a bottleneck link, the transfer completion time of each file would severely increase.
In response to the needs for reducing the transfer time of files simultaneously transmitted, the flow-based "store-and-forward" paradigm is being considered in which too much competitions of flows are avoided by time-domain scheduling.
In this report, we first show the basic advantage of this paradigm though NS-2 simulation, We also have implemented a preliminary flow scheduling system for multiple file transfer using OpenFlow switch, by which we evaluated the HTTP file download performance.
The OpenFlow-based experimental results showed that, in a $100$Mb/s bottleneck case, a serialized flow scheduling (in which the number of simultaneous transmissions on a bottleneck link is limited to one) reduces the average file transfer time as expected.
In contrast, in a $1000$Mb/s bottleneck case, the advantage was not clear mainly due to the flow change waiting time (between the preceding and the succeeding flows) caused by the preliminary implementation.
However, it is also implied that this paradigm would successfully reduce the average file transfer times in various conditions if the flow change waiting time can be reduced. |
