Developing a tablet/smart phone-based application as a communication aid for individuals with physical disabilities

(in English) Individuals who have difficulty speaking because of severe physical disabilities often use communication tools available on personal computers to converse with others. However, currently they cannot use these tools when they are away from home and mobile. This is because they have difficulty fixing the communication tools to a wheelchair and in carrying a personal computer along. In view of this issue, we have developed an application that supplements communication using a mobile terminal that can be carried along easily. Moreover, because of the great need that we perceived for such a device, we produced a switch connector that connects the mobile terminal with an input device that people with physical challenges are accustomed to using. In addition, on the basis of a survey of physically handicapped people who used this application with the mobile terminal connected to the input device, we found that they now have the ability to communicate spontaneously, even when they are away from home and mobile.
