Reward system modulation induced by partner's cooperative behavior: An fMRI study

(in English) The reward-related cortical areas can be activated by various stimuli, including not only monetary rewards, but also social interaction (e.g., admiration etc.). These led us a hypothesis that reward system should be dynamically modulated for adapting to fluid environments with social interaction. Peoples must obtain their reward with keeping interaction to cooperative/selfish partners. Here we assumed that the partners' cooperative behavior would be a crucial factor in the modulation of neural reward system. We used a modified version of centipede game as a task in the fMRI. This task is a dynamic version of prisoner’s dilemma game. To obtain more monetary rewards, participants must decide their strategy depend on their partner's cooperativeness. Our results showed that the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) and the insula activated significantly in an estimation of cooperativeness. The middle cingulate cortex (MCC) activated significantly in a competitive partner condition. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the caudate activated significantly as reward-related regions.
