System engineers must review new configuration when configuration changes are applied to IT system. The amount of configuration information in the IT system increases when virtualization technologies are adopted in the IT system. In the case, the time required for reviewing new configuration also increases. In this paper, we propose a risk quantification method for configuration changes, to reduce the time of review with accuracy of the review. This method calculates the risk of design errors included in the configuration changes based on trends of past changes, and highlights the high risk parts in the changes. An evaluation on the time and accuracy of review with 6 examinees was conducted. The result of evaluation shows that the proposed method can reduce the time of review by 51 percent without almost any increase in operational errors, compared to a traditional method highlighting the difference between the configuration before and after change. The result suggests the possibility that the proposed method is effective for actual operations required for configuration changes in virtualized IT systems. |
