Development and evaluation of a real-time sleepiness prediction system utilizing vestibulo-ocular reflex

(in English) Falling asleep while driving is directly linked with a fatal accident. Therefore, it is important to detect or preferably to predict driver’s sleepiness. We have demonstrated that the pupil, and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) can be predictors of one’s sleepiness. Here we developed a real-time sleepiness prediction system that initiates a bio-feedback stimulus to a car driver to prevent him/her from falling asleep when sleepiness is predicted. We employed VOR as a predictor, and micro-vibration on the steering wheel as a bio-feedback stimulus. We evaluated the system in driving simulation environment, and demonstrate that the bio-feedback stimulus initiated when sleepiness is predicted can maintain driver’s arousal level longer than without the bio-feedback.
